#Cisco #UCS #Failures prompt #recall program

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/ts/fn/634/fn63430.html

Cisco is having to replace all the B440 blades that are deployed:
 Update:
The firmware upgrade initially prescribed in this Field Notice has successfully detected FET failures and shut down servers, preventing a potential thermal event. Since this upgrade was released, however, a FET failure on a UCS B440 Blade Server has resulted in a second incident as described above. Cisco is directly contacting UCS B440 Blade Server customers and will replace UCS B440 Blade Servers currently deployed at customer sites. Cisco is making UCS B440 Blade Server hardware modifications, and a hardware replacement program has been launched.

I wonder what kind of hit Cisco will have to take to the bottom line to replace all of the B440 blades!!!!!

#High #Performance #GRE capabilities of #HP #5800 Switch

The 5800 series of switches can do high performance GRE.  You can use up to (3) 1gb or 10gb interfaces and creating a service port, bind them together to deliver higher performance:

Create a Service Loopback Group
[5800]service-loopback group 1 type tunnel

Assign GigabitEthernet 1/0/47 and 1/0/48 to the Service Loopback Group.  (Yes, you cannot use those ports for anything after that!  Sorry)
[5800]interface GigabitEthernet1/0/47
[5800-GigabitEthernet1/0/47]stp disable
[5800-GigabitEthernet1/0/47]port service-loopback group 1
[5800]interface GigabitEthernet1/0/48
[5800-GigabitEthernet1/0/48]stp disable
[5800-GigabitEthernet1/0/48]port service-loopback group 1

Create the GRE Tunnel Interface and assign the Service Loopback Group to it.
[5800]interface tunnel 0
[5800-Tunnel0]ip address 192.168.1.1 24
[5800-Tunnel0]source 1.1.1.1
[5800-Tunnel0]destination 2.2.2.2
[5800-Tunnel0]tunnel-protocol gre
[5800-Tunnel0]service-loopback-group 1

This configuration should allow up you to go over 1Gbps in performance on a GRE tunnel on the 5800.

One good point to make... you are NOT actually using the ports you are assigning to the service group.  You are assigning their ASIC resources.  The ports themselves are not usable as ports any longer. The GRE tunnel would take whatever route out of other interfaces to get to its destination.

#IOS & #NX-OS definitely not the same OS

Even after being out for quite a while..there are still a lot of differences between the two...

#40gb and #100gb fiber connectors

Are you curious as to how 40gb and 100gb is going to change your world in either your data center or out to your closets?  Gone are the days when you'll use one pair of fiber per link!  We're moving to 4 and even 6 pair of  fiber per link:

#2012 #Prediction #Extreme will have to do something

whether they are taken private by a PE firm, bought and merged into someone else, or just closed up... they cant survive

thats my thoughts... here's what the Fool thinks...

Will #Oracle buy #Brocade

Plausible... if they are giong to compete in the data center business...they need networking.

this could be a big  blow to HP...while HP only competes with Brocade 2% of the time...Brocade is a huge fibre channel partner of HPs.

Will #Dell make an impact in the the #network space?

http://nerdtwilight.wordpress.com/2011/12/20/dells-bid-for-data-center-distinction/

unsure... and will Dell focus on going head to head with Cisco? or with HP?

my guess is Cisco as 1) they are the big dog and 2) Dell feels most hurt by UCS and wants to strike back
